Solution to 38: Four Legs in the Morning

How do you knock your opponent down from his perch at 19 life? For one, you’re definitely casting the Magister Sphinx next turn… but you’ll need to do a little legwork for the last ten damage. In order to do that, you’ll need to get some creatures past Oedipus’ blockers; Skybind can help you out here, but only if you can make sure that the top card of your library is an artifact, creature or land…

  1. Before the end of Oedipus’ turn, tap two plains to add WW (one used as generic mana); two islands, Ancient Spring, and Eye of Ramos to add UUUU (two used as generic mana); and one swamp to add B (used as generic mana) to your mana pool.
  2. Spend 2U to cast Psionic Blast on your Belltower Sphinx. Psionic Blast deals 4 damage to Belltower Sphinx and 2 damage to you. You are now at 1 life.
  3. Belltower Sphinx’s ability triggers, forcing you to put the top four cards of your library into your graveyard. Plains, Elixir of Immortality, Defang, and Vengeance are all put into your graveyard. You now have no cards in your library.
  4. Spend 1, tap Arbiter of the Ideal, and tap Revelsong Horn to activate the Horn’s ability. Choose to give the Thundercloud Elemental +1/+1 until end of turn. Thundercloud Elemental is now a 4/5 creature.
  5. Spend 1W to cast Reprisal on Thundercloud Elemental, destroying it. Oedipus puts Thundercloud Elemental into his graveyard.
  6. Spend U to activate Cerulean Sphinx’s ability, reshuffling it into your library. Cerulean Sphinx is now the only card remaining in your library.
  7. Allow Oedipus to end his turn. Oedipus’s turn ends, and your turn begins.
  8. During your untap step, you untap all of your lands, Arbiter of the Ideal, Revelsong Horn, and Eye of Ramos.
  9. Arbiter of the Ideal’s Inspired ability triggers. You reveal the top card of your library ― Cerulean Sphinx ― and put it onto the battlefield as an enchantment with a manifestation counter on it.
  10. When Cerulean Sphinx enters the battlefield, it triggers Skybind’s ability. Choose to exile Oedipus’s Phyrexian Delver.
  11. During your upkeep, tap an island to add U to your mana pool.
  12. Spend U to activate Cerulean Sphinx’s ability, reshuffling it into your library. Cerulean Sphinx is now, once again, the only card remaining in your library.
  13. During your draw step, draw Cerulean Sphinx.
  14. At the start of your first main phase, tap two plains to add WW (one used as generic mana), one island and Eye of Ramos to add UU (one used as generic mana), and one swamp to add B to your mana pool.
  15. Tap and sacrifice Ancient Spring to add WB (both used as generic mana) to your mana pool.
  16. Spend 4WUB to cast Magister Sphinx. When Magister Sphinx enters the battlefield, choose to have Oedipus’s life total become 10.
  17. Declare the start of your combat phase, assigning your Belltower Sphinx and your Arbiter of the Ideal to attack.
  18. Oedipus only has one flying creature remaining: Hover Barrier. Oedipus may assign his Hover Barrier to block either your Belltower Sphinx or your Arbiter of the Ideal.
  19. Sacrifice Eye of Ramos to add U (used as generic mana) to your mana pool.
  20. Spend 1, tap Magister Sphinx, and tap Revelsong Horn to activate the Horn’s ability. Choose to give your unblocked creature +1/+1 until end of turn. If Belltower Sphinx is unblocked, it is now a 3/6 creature; If Arbiter of the Ideal is unblocked, it is now a 3/4 creature.
  21. Your unblocked creature deals 3 combat damage to Oedipus. Oedipus is now 7 life.
  22. Do nothing during your second main phase.
  23. Declare the end of your turn. Oedipus’s Phyrexian Delver returns to the battlefield under his control, forcing him to return a creature card from his graveyard to the battlefield. Because the only creature card in Oedipus’s graveyard is the Thundercloud Elemental, Oedipus returns the Elemental to play, loses 7 life, and is defeated.
